New Jersey Auto Insurance Rates Remain Among Highest
The news continues to be bleak for New Jersey motorists looking to buy motor vehicle insurance—the Garden State is once again among the five most expensive states in which to purchase a policy for coverage on your automobile, joining Florida, Michigan, New York and Louisiana as the priciest places to insure a vehicle.
According to studies, the principal reasons New Jersey consistently ranks among the costliest states for car insurance are:
- A high population density — New Jersey has one of the greatest concentrations of population in the country. The more people you have in a smaller area—particularly the more people you have on the road, the more accidents there will be. The more claims insurers pay out, the more they have to charge in premiums to cover their losses.
- High accident rates — In addition to one of the highest population densities in the nation, New Jersey also has one of the highest accident rates in the country
- Medical fraud related to motor vehicle accidents — New Jersey is near the top in the number and dollar amount of fraudulent medical claims arising out of car crashes.
- Personal injury protection (PIP) amounts that are among the highest in the United States — New Jersey has PIP of up to $250,000 and a lot of PIP fraud, which increases the cost of insurance for all drivers.
